First part: english language

The course provides students with the tools they need to be able to improve their practical skills in the language. By the end of the 8-week course, they should feel more confident in using and understanding English in the real world.

Lessons are centred around the students rather than the teacher, and they focus on the typical problems that native Italian speakers encounter when they try to express themselves in English and understand native English speakers. All lessons are held entirely in English.


  1. Introduction to the practical learning method vs. more traditional language learning styles.
  2. Focus on the English sound system and the strong connection between pronunciation and comprehension.
  3. Grammar work based on the typical mistakes native Italian speakers make when communicating in English.
  4. Comprehension practice using videos designed for native English speakers, and not for text books.


Course materials are provided by the teacher either at the lessons, or electronically in advance. In the latter case, students are expected to print copies of the relevant pages to bring to the lessons.

Second part: scientific writing

TEACHER: Prof. Marcella Caputi


This course aims at preparing students to understand the structure of scientific articles in the field of Psychology, distinguishing between the different types of article (original contribution, review, meta-analysis). The lectures focus on the analysis of words and of the sentence construction typically used in such articles. A further aim of the course is to guide students towards autonomy in preparing a research report, paying particular attention to the American Psychological Association (APA) norms and to the correct use of bibliographic databases.

By the end of the course, students should be able to understand scientific Psychology papers written in English and to produce a research report. For this purpose, the course aims at developing the ability to understand and reproduce the outline of a scientific text.


Reading of scientific papers through the formulation of questions, search for key information, analysis of the most common terms and phrasal structures, summary of the main sections. Production of research reports in English. Guide to the use of the main databases. Learning about APA norms.
