Christopher Hopwood – University of Zurich
Biography
Christopher J. Hopwood is Professor of Personality Psychology at the University of Zurich. His research focuses on personality and its development, interpersonal processes, psychopathology, and psychotherapy. He received his PhD from Texas A&M University and previously held academic positions at Michigan State University and the University of California, Davis. His work explores how personality shapes human relationships, psychological functioning, and change across the lifespan. In 2024, he received the Murray-Helson Award for his contributions to the study of personality and individual differences.
Lectio Magistralis entitled “Personality Disorder Diagnosis“
The diagnosis of personality disorders has undergone a profound transformation over the past decades, shifting from rigid categorical systems to more flexible, empirically grounded dimensional approaches. Traditional categorical models, such as those in DSM-IV and DSM-5 Section II, have been widely criticized for issues of comorbidity, heterogeneity, and arbitrary thresholds.
In response, recent diagnostic frameworks, including the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) and the ICD-11 personality disorder model, emphasize impairments in personality functioning and maladaptive trait dimensions as core features, aligning clinical practice more closely with contemporary research. Parallel to these developments, the HiTOP framework proposes a fully dimensional, hierarchical structure of psychopathology that integrates personality pathology within broader spectra.
This talk will trace the evolution of personality disorder classification, highlight key empirical and conceptual advances, and discuss current challenges and implications for assessment, case formulation, and clinical practice.
