Master’s Degree
The Master’s Degree in Psychology aims to teach graduates specific expertise in the field of clinical psychology (diagnosis, planning, consultancy) in accordance with European guidelines for training to be a clinical psychologist. The course adopts an international approach to scientific training to open up career opportunities for students in the world of clinical psychology.The Master’s course in Psychology is the Italian version of the Masterstudium Psychologie that Sigmund Freud PrivatUniversität teaches in Vienna. It corresponds to Italy’s LM-51 master’s degree in psychology. The master’s course is worth a total of 120 University Academic Credits (ECTS credits) when completed and offers three different majors in clinical psychology:
- Clinical Psychology
- Developmental clinical Psychology
- Digital Psychology
The courses are taught in Milan and Vienna. Timetables are organised so that students attend most of their lectures in Milan in Italian and occasionally spend two-three weeks in Vienna, where they take intensive courses in English and are also involved in research sessions and workshops.
The choice of major, which is compulsory, dictates the two-year study syllabus encompassing different realms of expertise: (1) Theoretical Foundations / Theory, (2) Specialisation / Consolidation, (3) Elective / optional lectures, (4) Research Methods and Evaluation, (5) Framework, (6) Competences for action, (7) Practice, (8) Preparation and supervision of the Master’s thesis.
During the years of study, specific measures will be put in place for students with disabilities and with DSA certification.

Courses involving a combination of theoretical and practical work for which compulsory attendance is required.
Internship
A 600-hours internship at one of the facilities affiliated with Sigmund Freud University under the tutorship of a professional psychologist. The internship is combined with an interns-tutoring course, a weekly meeting when all the students can share their experiences as interns.

Graduates with a master’s degree are qualified to work within the realms specified by the official regulations (Law no.56 of 18th February 1989) after first passing the state examination and enrolling in section A of the Association of Psychologists.
Working as a psychologist involves the use of cognitive/operating tools for the purposes of prevention, diagnosis, rehabilitation work and support for people, groups, social bodies and communities. It also involves experimentation, research and training in this field. More specifically, majoring in clinical psychology qualifies graduates to specialise in health care, psychological diagnosis and relational support/assistance.
Enrolment
The degree courses in psychology available at SFU Milan in 2022-2023 can take about 60 students per class to guarantee an exclusive education tailor-made to each individual student for the entire duration of the courses. Students interested in enrolling must follow the following admissions procedures.
Admittance requirements
A degree in Psychological Techniques and Sciences (L-24) is required to enrol on the master’s course in psychology. Bachelor’s degrees in psychology from other countries in the European Union will be assessed individually. Students must also have at least level B2 English (Common European Framework of Reference for languages, CEFR).
The certification must report the linguistic level achieved (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) of the CEFR and the evaluation obtained of the levels of competence achieved in each of the skills of: comprehension, oral interaction/production and written production (speaking, reading, writing, listening). These are the certifications accepted:
- Cambridge Assessment English (CAE)
- Pearson (ESOL)
- Cambridge – International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- Educational Testing Service – (TOEFL e TOEIC)
- Trinity College London (ISE: Integrated Skills in English)
- Cambridge – British Institutes
- LanguageCert
- Cambridge – English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
- Cambridge – Linguaskill
For foreign students is required to have a certified competence in the Italian language of at least level B2, issued by University for Foreigners of Perugia/CVCL, University for Foreigners of Siena/Centro CILS, Roma Tre/Certification Office – Linguistic Department, Società Dante Alighieri/PLIDA Project.
Admission to the master’s degree course of Sigmund Freud University takes place after passing an admission interview which can also be taken by students of a degree course in Psychological Sciences and Techniques (L-24) who have not yet graduated but who, at the date of the interview, have acquired at least 120 ECTS (officially certified).
Interview
HOW IT WORKS AND DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
Individual interviews will be held to select students for the Courses. Individual interviews are intended to assess potential students in terms of their: 1) motivation to study psychology, 2) scientific expertise, 3) potential to make progress.
To take the interview it is necessary to book online and deliver before the date of the interview:
- a motivation letter of at least 300 words
- a copy of the degree in Psychological techniques and sciences (L-24) if already obtained or, for students who intend to take the interview before obtaining the degree, the grade list of the exams taken.
- a certificate which certifies a knowledge of the English language of level B2 or higher, issued exclusively by one of the recognized certification bodies indicated in the paragraph “Access requirements”.
For students who are not certified in English at the time of the interview, it will be necessary to deliver at least the B2 level certification at the time of enrollment in the first year of the course.
The admissions interview cost € 100, plus tax stamps, to be paid by bank transfer before the aforementioned interview.
Students meeting the admissions requirements can apply for an admissions interview for the bachelor’s course by filling in the appropriate form.
SELECTION AND RESULT
The sum of the points scored for the interview and the marks they get in their school leaving examination (or the average of their grades of the fourth year) will give a final overall total of between 50-100. Only students scoring at least 80points will be accepted.
The outcome of the admission interview will be communicated to the candidate within 3 working days from the date of the interview.
Enrolment
Students who are selected will be sent an application form by email.
Their application will be accepted if it reaches the secretary’s office within 10 working days of being notified about the outcome of the admissions interview. They will be officially enrolled when they pay the first instalment of their university fees as referred to in Fees and Subsidiaries.
Applications arriving after the 10-day deadline will also be accepted until there are no more places available.
Students will be enrolled in the Faculty of Psychology in Vienna. The Department of Psychology Milan is part of this faculty and students will abide by the general regulations of the main faculty, the general regulations of the university and the local regulations for the department in Milan.
Provisional enrolment (for undergraduate students)
Undergraduates who have already acquired at least 120 ECTS at the time of their admissions interview and whose application has been accepted will be able to enrol as stipulated above. Their enrolment will become official when the secretary’s office is informed of their graduation. Students who have not graduated by 30th September 2022 must have completed all the bachelor’s degree examinations to be entitled to enrol on the master’s course as an “auditor student”. Auditor students can attend all lectures but can only sit examinations after they have graduated. They must graduate by and no later than 28th February 2023.
