Bachelor’s Degree

The Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology aims to provide graduates with expertise in the field of psychological sciences and methods with a special focus on research and career opportunities in the world of psychology. The bachelor’s course in psychology is the Italian version of the Bachelorstudium Psychologie that Sigmund Freud PrivatUniversität teaches in Vienna in compliance with Austrian standards and it corresponds to Italy’s L-24 degree in psychological sciences and methods. The bachelor’s course is worth a total of 180 University Academic Credits (ECTS credits) corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS credits for each term.

The courses are taught in Milan and Vienna. Timetables are organised so that students attend most of their lectures in Milan in Italian; during the second year of the course, students attend a full semester in Vienna following the lesson in English, staying here.

The syllabus is spread over six semesters for a total of ten modules: (1) History of Paradigms in Psychology, (2) Empirical Human and Social Research, (3) Neurosciences and Cognitive Sciences, (4) General Psychology, (5) Statistics, (6) Test Theory, (7) Qualitative Research Methods, (8) Developmental and Educational Psychology, (9) Social Psychology, (10) Psychological Diagnostics, (11) Differential Psychology, (12) Psychological action competencies, (13) Foundations for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work, (14) Bachelor Preparation, (15) amd (16) Elective Module A e B.

The classes are small and teaching is focused on providing career-oriented professional training with approximately 40% of teaching hours being practical work.

During the years of study, specific measures will be put in place for students with disabilities and with DSA certification.

Career opportunities

After enrolling in section B of the Association of Psychologists, a graduate in psychology (psychological techniques and sciences) can work (under the supervision of a psychologist enrolled in section A of the Association) as a doctor of psychological techniques in accordance with law (Decree by the President of the Republic 328/01 and Law 170/03), i.e. in the field of psychological techniques applied to social, organisational and work contexts and in the realm of psychological techniques for personal and community services.

Enrolment

The degree courses in psychology available at SFU Milan in 2024-2025 can take about 60 students per class to guarantee an exclusive education tailor-made to each individual student for the entire duration of the courses. Students interested in enrolling must follow the following admissions procedures.

Admittance requirements 

A high-school leaving certificate is required to enrol on the Bachelor’s Course in Psychology at Sigmund Freud University.

Students must also have at least level B2 English (Common European Framework of Reference for languages, CEFR).
The certification must report the linguistic level achieved (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) of the CEFR and the evaluation obtained of the levels of competence achieved in each of the skills of: comprehension, oral interaction/production and written production (speaking, reading, writing, listening). These are the certifications accepted:

  • Cambridge Assessment English (CAE)
  • Pearson (ESOL)
  • Cambridge – International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Educational Testing Service – (TOEFL e TOEIC)
  • Trinity College London (ISE: Integrated Skills in English)

For studentes who have attended a European school, an IB degree is required with at least 3 HL subjects and 3 SL subjects within the curriculum. Other qualifications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

For foreign students is required to have a certified competence in the Italian language of at least level B2, issued by University for Foreigners of Perugia/CVCL, University for Foreigners of Siena/Centro CILS, Roma Tre/Certification Office – Linguistic Department, Società Dante Alighieri/PLIDA Project.

Admission to Sigmund Freud University takes place after passing an admission interview which can be taken starting from the last year of upper secondary education.

Interview
How it works and documents required

Individual interviews will be held to select students for the Courses. Individual interviews are intended to assess potential students in terms of: 1) motivation to study psychology, 2) general culture, 3) potential to make progress.

To take the interview it is necessary to book online and deliver before the date of the interview:

  • a motivation letter of at least 300 words
  • a copy of the school-leaving certificate if already obtained or, for students who intend to take the interview before the final high school exam, the fourth-year grades (penultimate year)
  • a certificate which certifies a knowledge of the English language of level B2 or higher, issued exclusively by one of the recognized certification bodies indicated in the paragraph “Access requirements”.

For students who are not certified in English at the time of the interview, it will be necessary to deliver at least the B2 level certification at the time of enrollment in the first year of the course.

The admissions interview cost € 100, plus tax stamps, to be paid by bank transfer before the aforementioned interview. 

Students meeting the admissions requirements can apply for an admissions interview for the bachelor’s course by filling in the appropriate form.

Selection and result

The sum of the points scored for the interview and the marks they get in their school leaving examination (or the average of their grades of the fourth year) will give a final overall total of between 50-100. Only students scoring at least 75 points will be accepted.

The outcome of the admission interview will be communicated to the candidate within 3 working days from the date of the interview.

Enrolment

Students who are selected will be sent an application form by email.
Their application will be accepted if it reaches the secretary’s office within ten working days of being notified about the outcome of the admissions interview. They will be officially enrolled when they pay the first instalment of their university fees as referred to in Fees and Subsidiaries.
Applications arriving after the 10-day deadline will also be accepted until there are no more places available.

Students will be enrolled in the Faculty of Psychology in Vienna. The Department of Psychology Milan is part of this faculty and students will abide by the general regulations of the main faculty, the general regulations of the university and the local regulations for the department in Milan.
